Hi, talking about the Chevalier and the connection to Leonidas Trujillo, I did some digging because I could not quite believe Joseph Chevalier would have time to have any children with a black woman while serving under Leclerc during the 1802 reoccupation of Haiti by the French.

So, it turns out that Joseph D. Chevalier was a military doctor who spent quite some time in Haiti (Saint Domingue) investigating all the strange diseases among the slave population during the colonial times around 1730-1750.

While living in Haiti he corresponded by letters with M. de Jean, Regent Doctor of the faculty of Medicine at the University of Paris, letters that were later published in a small textbook format (Paris, 1752).

He must have been quite old when he returned to Haiti with Leclerc in 1802 therefore I presume he would not have been in the best shape to impregnate a woman.

So most likely he had children with black slave women prior to 1802 and probably prior to the start of the Haitian revolution 1790. He also published a textbook titled " Maladies de Saint Domingue" Paris, 1802.
Well, this is very interesting piece of history: the great great grandson of a doctor finds himself the executioner and the nemesis of the very same kind of people that his great great grandfather may have tried to save.
Who knew?

Learn your history, it helps.

Welcome to the revolution
