The tragic loss of the haitian diaspora

< Previous | Home | Next >

Most Haitians started to emigrate in the United States at the end of the sixties and at the beginning of the seventies.

As if Haiti didn't have enough problems, it will be facing the loss of its diaspora in a few years.

Twenty years ago, it was relatively easy for a Haitian person living illegally in the States to get a job and start the process to legalize himself.

Nowadays, after September 11th, the whole process is very complicated and getting harder by the day.
Many Haitians who have settled in this country and are either retiring or about to retire cannot look to Haiti to spend their retirement days because of the constant problems facing the country.

Furthermore, many of their children barely speak creole or had never been to Haiti.

By the time these people die, let's say in about twenty years, Haiti would have lost most of its diaspora.

That situation would be a huge blow to the people who depend so much on the diaspora for their everyday needs.

Unless the government undertakes changes to pacify the country and re-integrate the diaspora in the life of the country, Haiti would lose most of the estimated two billion dollars it received from the diaspora.

This is indeed a true emergency.
