I actually have been to Haiti.

They have a lot of smart people and a lot more who are illiterate or just barely read. One problem I read that I hope is exaggerated is 80% of university graduates supposedly emigrate.

The only benefit that is they send remittances to family.

Haitians definitely are not the most ignorant people in the world.

A little of half of them can read at at least a grade school level.

Contrast to Afgans, where 70% of men and
90% of women really are illiterate.

Read in the news today that only 15% of police and army can read or write- how do they even know what the law is?

How do they report the reason they arrest someone?

Haiti at least requires its police to be able to fill out an arrest report.

Too many Haitians blame cholera on people putting magic powder in the water for malevolent reasons instead of focusing on hygeiene and potable water.

Too many ready to assault and rob aid workers.

Too many send their kids out to sell stuff on the street instead of sending them to school, or give the kids to a family to serve as a restavek, or slave.

They have cut down all their forests for firewood, leading to widespread erosion of their farm soil. AND THERE ARE HAITIANS WHO ARE TRYING TO TURN THIS AROUND.

Whatever Preval's faults, he did not emigrate.

Same with the people competing to succeed him.
