Taking care of our health

< Previous | Home | Next >

I had not too long ago the opportunity to visit a couple of those government offices and I have to admit it wasn't a pleasant experience.

The minister was, as usual, late in coming to work and one of his young secretaries let me in (his concubines, I suppose).

Belly protuding, the minister, when he finally showed up, started to speak endlessly on the phone, after barking a few orders here and there.

Was the man on official business?

No, all private stuff.

After several hours, he finally noticed that there were people waiting for him.
The same scenario repeated itself at another government office.

To get back to our subject, are we people getting anything from these "public servants"?

Haiti can do without all of these people and it won't even show.
One of the things that really bother me is when I see the lack of directives concerning the health of the population.

There might be an outbreak of meningitis in an area, nobody notices.

An epidemy of conjunctivitis next week, no one cares.

Why then do we need a health minister?

Another thing that gets me upset is the proliferation of street vendors of food. They sell their stuff without any regard for basic hygiene rules.

The same hands that touch the dirty gourdes are the same hands that handle the fried plantains, sweet potatoes or "griots".

First of all, these vendors should be regulated.

They should be required to have a license which should only be delivered to them after they have taken a basic hygiene course.

They should also be required to wear plastic gloves when handling the food.
Another time, I went to visit a "butcher shop".

The ox, after it was killed, was laying on the ground, next to a pile of garbage and mud, and the buyers would come and get a piece of meat. Talking about fresh beef, haitian style!
All these observations and more make me wonder about the job these government officals are doing.

Are they appointed just to sit at an office and do nothing or to improve our sorry state of affairs?

You decide.

God bless!!!
