Haiti has been in the news, much lately, due to the earthquake,.

That is a country where, according to Caribbean-American author Lili Dauphin, things that would be considered child abuse to our way of thinking including the serious beating of children is considered the proper way to raise them. In her series starting with the book Crying Mountain, that chronicles the life of Tilou, a little Haitian girl, Lili repeatedly draws attention to Haitian people's propensity towards severely beating their children.
