Zac
Believe you me, I agree with everthing you said. Nevertheless, it is just a matter of diferent opinions.
Zac, trust me when I say that I love Toussaint Louverture and I have great admiration for the man just like I love Dessalines and all the other ones who had sacrified their lives to cut the chain of slavery off our ankles to set us free.
And frankly, I would tell you that these are the men who give me reason to maintain the little pride that I got left as a Haitian.
You said "Comparing Toussaint to Martin Luther King Jr. is really baseless.
He was not leading marches to end slavery the man actually fought the oppressors."
Answer: I did not compare Toussaint Louveture to Martin Luther King J. as you claimed.
I compare Toussaint's "Non-violence" tactics to Martin Luther King's non-violence philosophy and principle.
Not that I am violent nor that I am promoting violence by any shred of imagination, but I my opinion, if Dessalines, Capois-La-Mort, Boisrond Tonerre, and the other ones had adopted Toussaint's non-violence, talking, negotiating tactics, Haitians would have still been in slavery today.
You said "And I think it takes enormous strength of character and wisdom not cowardice or complicity for Toussaint to fight the cruel oppressors aggressively and yet still maintaining his humanity."
Zac, I never accused Toussaint of cowardice or complicity, these are your words.
I would, however, consider Toussaint as weak and I do understand the philosophy and principle of his strategies, after all, he was living in his master's home therefore he had to be careful how he used information he got from snooping into his master conversations/meetings.
But again that strategy would not be successful by freeing us from slavery considering the time of event.
We talking about the 18th century here.
I do acknowledge Toussaint Louverture's contributions to his country, Haiti and to us Haitians as a people, but it okay to recognize his flaws and short comings as the same applies to Dessalines, Capois-La-Mort, Boisrond Tonerre and all the other ones who died for us and Haiti.
It is a real shame that we, Haitians, have chosen to flush all their accomplishments down the toilet because of our incompetence, mediocrity, greed and lack of wisdom, which cause us to become the most dysfunctional of the dysfuntion countries on the planet.
