Andrew Andy Thomas,
You've reported an excerpt from HAITI INNOVATION that "Some people contended that the conference was elitist and excluded everyday Haitians here and at home, partly because of its $250 admission fee. Dark suits were in abundance."
That's exactly what I was trying to convey in my messages about this conference.
Those who organized this conference intentionally charge such a high admission fee to 1) get rich very quick which has nothing to do with bringing change in Haiti, and 2) to keep away as many Haitians as possible from participating.
Call me an skeptic if you want to, but I really believe with every fiber in my body that this so-called "International Haitian Congress 2009) was nothing more than a "Photo Op" which will not materialize to absolutely nothing.
I'd bet my life on it that maybe 2 years from now there will be another such conference maybe under a different banner but organized by these very same people in the name of bringing change in Haiti as usual.
Until Haitians and the dysfuctional Haitian government finally understand the tremendous negative impact of "EXCLUSION," well, I'm afraid to say it that Haiti is doomed to be the worst country ever in this universe.
A country cannot progress without enganging/including ALL of its people into the process.
You or someone else may say, well, this conference would not be able to accomodate everybody, well, the organizers could have chosen a bigger place.
But again, why a conference of that magnitude was not organized as a big "PUBLIC FORUM" held in one of those big auditoriums centers in Miami like the "Calais Center?"
Let's face it, this was nothing but a meeting of the "good old boys club."
End of last year 2008, this Haitian guy who claimed to be the president of the "Haitian Chamber of Commerce" in Miami, came on the blog talking about a big conference like this one that was going to take place in Miami.
The purpose of the conference was to figure out how to take advantage of the $2 million US had allocated to create jobs and to promote an "Entrepeneurship Program" in Haiti.
Like I just carachterized this conference to be a self-serve profiteer and nothing to do with Haiti, I said the same about the Haitian Commerce.
And so far, the Haitian Chamber of Haitian in Miami has not proven me wrong.
I have heard and witnessed myriad of conferences organized by Haitians in Canada, in the US, in France, and in many other parts of the world in my lifetime.
Every single one of them met under the banner of bringing change to Haiti.
And so far, not one ever come through.
This is 2009 and Haiti only keep getting worse and worse every passing day.
There would be some people reading this message and will say, wow! this is the most skeptical man they have ever seen and that I need to give "International Haitian Diaspora Congress 2009" a chance, the benefit of the doubt.
This is a Haitian pattern that has been going on since Duvalier (Papa Doc).
I ran out of chance and doubt to give to these people trying to get rich quick on the name of Haiti
Changing a country can't be done out of "impulsivity" nor by being passive-aggressive.
What's the point of organizing all of these expensive conferences when knowing very well there will never be an implementation?
This is insane!
