Marc, my first advice to you is to get the university involve.

Many of my students have done similar projects with Haiti, the DR, and Africa.

Most of their funding came from the university, and that is also the best first route for your project.

If your project is affiliated with the university, you will get funds not just from the school but also from many other non school sources.

What department are you in?

Maybe I can help get you started; I know some people over there.
