what is the area around les cayes like?

I am going to be making a trip to the Les Cayes area sometime in the next year and would like to know as much as possible about the city and surrounding countryside.

For instance, what are the main economic activities, is there dependable electrical service, is there as much extreme poverty as in other parts of Haiti, what is the climate like, are the residents friendly towards white non-Haitians or do they hate them, are there security risks (kidnapping etc.), is the police service professional and competent, is there much corruption, is it necessary to know Creole in order to function in the community, how do you get to Les Cayes safely from Port Au Prince (road, air, ferry), what is the population and ethnic distribution of the Les Cayes area?

I would define the Les Cayes area as the city itself plus 10 miles around it (West, East & North).
