Inflation in Haiti

< Previous | Home | Next >

I recently went to France on vacation for three weeks.

I staid in an area called Bretagne in the northwest of France.

During my stay in France, I went to Paris for three days to visit the french capital.

A lot of people in Haiti complain how life is very expensive in the country.

I beg to differ.

Granted that our salary is low compared to some other countries, but life in Haiti is nowhere as expensive as in France for example.

To give you an idea, I paid 4.50 euros for a hot dog down there.

A drink or a bottle of water in a machine was fetching 2.50 euros.

A liter of gas was selling for about 1.30 euros.

Considering the exchande rate of about $1.4 us dollars for an euro, my hot dog was costing me close to $7 us, the drink close to $4 us and a gallon of gas around $8 or $ 9 us dollars.

How is that for expensive?

Our problem in Haiti is that our salary remains low and our money has devalued so much in the past twenty years without the government doing anything to fight that. If you consider that the haitian dollar went from parity to the us dollar to a drop of more than 700%, you can realize why the country has lost most of its economic wealth.

One of the solution to this problem is to be innovative: get rid of the haitian currency and replace it with a strong currency like the euro or the us dollar.

As Argentina did in the last few years, you would eliminate economic uncertainty created in trading.

Unless the government can take real initiative in facing our problems, like eliminating our currency and replacing it with a stronger one, Haiti's problems are not likely to be solved anytime soon.
God bless
