Good morning Linda, I'm laughing because of what I'm about to say but it is true. I said it once, I have a crush on you. And I'll tell you why. I like women that are strong, intelligent, educated, well-informed and eloquent; You are all that and more. What you said about the Haitian male is very true. I lived in Florida for a long time and I went to a Haitian church there, I used to interact and have long discussions with the older men of the church.
So yes I can attest to the sexist views of the Haitian male.
I don't know for some reason me and debates go hand in hand.
I knew of the color issue before I knew of sexism.
I learned about sexism when I moved to the US. I remember posting something on the issue of Restavec a while back. In it, I talked about how my older brother and I experienced something similar to that for three years.
Well, apart from that I spent quite sometime living with my grandmother and aunts.
My grandmother from my mother's side was a strong woman.
I admired her. When I think about her I literally feel the love I had for her. Her husband died young and she never remarried.
She provided for her family.
She never went to school herself but she valued education and she made sure all her children went to school.
While none of them attended a university she made sure they finished Philo.
She pushed them that far because she always said her parents didn't send her to school because she was a girl. She had mostly girls with the exception of two boys. All the girls are older.
I grew up with a lot of women, I grew up watching my grandmother taking care of her family.
I never felt like I needed anything, my wants and my needs were met. She was smart, capable and very outspoken.
She basically shaped the way I look at women.
Because of her I know a woman can be just as capable, just as smart as a man. I see women as my equal.
I can never doubt a woman's abilities because she happens to be a woman.
That's why when I'm ready to settle down I want a woman who's strong, intelligent, a woman who can speak her mind. I want a partner not a maid. Forgive the expression but I believe some men view their wives as maids.
I'm a strong believer in education and I believe we can educate young males to respect women and we can shape their view of women in a positive way. I will go back to Haiti when I'm ready, education is an area I want to be involved in.
A lot of Haitian men were sexist in Haiti despite traveling and moving abroad they still retain the sexism.
And like you said a lot of them are extremely insecure, I guess they are threatened by a woman's intelligence.
It's unfortunate for them.
I remember when it was time for us to move to the US my grandmother was there at the US embassy with us when we got our visas.
I could go on and on but that would be unnecessary.
