Hi Soufnantiou; I have a few free days and I thought I would check out some old sites.
There was a time this was a real fun site. People discussed things, they argued, and the debates continued.
Now it seems that there are so many people on here who seem to be unable to elevate themselves above cursing and crawling in the gutter.
I think there are still some really good people here, so I'm going to stick around while I have some time off, but boy it's hard maneuvering around the garbage.
Anyway, I did already tell the individual about the word "Latin" and why it was used to define Haitians.
But you know there's just so much energy a person can spend trying to inform someone who does not want to know. If the individual really wanted to know the truth, there are plenty of ways for him to find out. We did what we needed to do; we told him what the facts are, now it's up to him to either continue in his ignorance or go out there and read-up on it. The information is available in any public library.
Here's a recap of some of what I wrote to him/her.
1. I thought perhaps this quote from Wikipidia might help you to understand why Haiti was always considered part of Latin America.
"Latin America (Portuguese and Spanish: América Latina; French: Amérique latine) is the region of the Americas where Romance languages, those derived from Latin (particularly Spanish and Portuguese), are primarily spoken."
2. Dear individual;
I gave you the wiki site because it was convenient and in this case accurate.
There are various books out there that support this understanding of Haiti as part of Latin America, including any older version World Fact Book or World Almanac published prior to the 2000.
(I have not looked at one since so I do not know if they still use that category).
I was not giving you my opinion, as I don't care either way. And if you do or do not agree with the definition that is entirely up to you; however, the fact remains that the language factor (in terms of languages with Latin roots) is what is used to classified Haiti as part of Latin America.
3. Dear individual;
As you seem sorely disturbed that Haitians are classified in the same group as you, perhaps I should mention that Haitians did not come up with that classification.
It was coined by the same people who coined all the words that demarcate people of color--whites.
I know that these days some Latinos are desperate to remove the black from their heritage, but it is prudent to remember that until the 1990s whites considered anyone from Latin America as dirty colored folks.
And because up until the 1960s Haiti was far ahead in social developments than most of Latin America, most Haitians actually hated being lumped into the same category as them.
The topic is: sir how is haiti a latin country
