Haiti's Poverty Stirs Nostalgia For The Old Days

Rft says...

Dessalines: The good old days weren't so good for everyone and the future is not as bad as it seems.

Our beloved Haiti is in a state of decline since the second civil war of 1806 (Petion vs Christophe).

Off course Haiti was better off during the Duvalier years than today.

But this argument is meaningless since it is a country in a state of decline; in other words it's like a line with a negative slope.

It does not matter where you measure the slope along the line, the slope will be always be the same negative magnitude.

So despite what the Duvalier regime built inside Haiti the whole Haitian economy was clandestinely declining just as much as it was under Soulouque, under Michel Domingue, under Salnave, under the ephemerous presidents and so forth...Across the past 200+ years, Haiti went from riches to rags; it does not matter what regime you look at. You gotta look at the agregate data. Are most of the Haitian families better off in 1985 than they were in 1957?

If that the answer is no, since it is a resounding NO then Duvalier's projects bear no fruits for Haiti.

Thanks

Haiti is the way it is today because of decades of Duvalier and his cronies mismanagement (father and son) and the looting of billions of dollars by all those people out of Haiti. Haiti lost the best of its population: engineers, architectures, doct > >

No my friend, you are right in many aspect of your analysis. Given the nature of the word Dictator, it is only a bad Government when the USA do not see any interest or benefit in it for them. HAITI had all those Industries which have provided the > >

Dessalines, we both cherish our beloved Haiti but we must set the record straigtht for the sake of historical accuracy. Papa Doc was a noirist like Dumarsais Estime. I doubt very much he was a qualified president but I believe he was a shrewd politic > >
