I am the public affairs officer at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, which replaced the Army's School of the Americas seven years ago when President Clinton signed the law that closed the school and created the institute.
Of all the names and the claims in the original article, exactly two had been to the school, and both of those were for Military Police courses when they were relatively junior officers/soldiers, in '56 and '59. Now how do you suppose that few weeks of their lives fifty years ago has relevance to their behavior now?
It is an absurd assumption, and a libel of the Soldiers who taught at the school, because there is no evidence they taught anything illegal, immoral or unethical.
Moreover, not one example of anyone from anywhere using what he learned at the school to commit any crime has ever been shown--not one.
It would be so much more useful to pursue those who have committed crimes and bring them to justice, than to go chasing after some irrelevant education they have had in their past. What good does it do, and how does it add to the indictment of the individual?
