Assessing President Preval's performance
Max Johnson Fgb says...
We Haitians desire so much to see positive changes in our country that we lose all rationality when it comes to evaluate our situation.
Although I personally like Mr. Preval as a president, we have to understand that so far he hasn't done much for the country.
Mr. Preval has benefited in his second term from tremendous changes in the international situation; the most important being the control of the american congress and senate by the democrats.
Money that was blocked under the republican congress was now flowing freely in the country.Similarly, Haiti benefited from the generous help of Canada and the European Union.
We all know that as a country we are facing enormous challenges.
Mr. Preval has so far paid lip services to the environment.
He should get the parliament to approve a law prohibiting anyone from cutting trees in the country.
Furthermore, a program should be set up by the government to hire at least a thousand people to plant trees in all the departments. This program should be in place for at least the next five to ten years until we plant a minimum of twenty million trees.
Mr. Preval needs also to break with the habit of concentrating everything in Port-au-prince.
He should plan for at least two more international airports in the country possibly in the North and South.
I would also suggest that some government offices and institutions be moved to other cities like Cape Haitian, Jacmel, Les Cayes and so on.
Finally, Mr. Preval has to make sure he develop a plan to make us more self-sufficient.We cannot always depend on foreign countries for money.Let's develop agricultural, fishing, manufacturing industries to create jobs and generate revenues for our country.
If and only if he succeeds in implementing these points, then Mr. Preval should be known as a great president.
God bless
