ti rene rene gracia preval
Cocotte says...
I don't see why you are so upset because Mr. Rene Preval was referred as "Ti Rene" I 'am sure and certain Mr. Preval will not be offended by the sobriquet the way you did; because he always has been referred as such by his friends and people in his neighborhood.
Nicknames is part of the haitian culture.
Most haitians have one. Sometimes it is being given to them by their parents at birth or as toddlers as a sign of affection.
I went to school with people that were always referred by their nickname and last name. I have trouble remembering their real name. One good example, The haitian Ambassador to Brazil Mr. Antoine Emmanuel Fenelon who died recently of a heart attack in a brazil's hospital was known as "Toto Fenelon" in his neighborhood, by his friends, his colleagues, and people that knew him. without being disrespectful.
If you are too young to know about this haitian fact, ask your parents.
I do not think it was disrespectful when they were calling Jean Bertrand Aristide " Titid".
Bill Clinton real name is "William Jefferson Clinton" Because we live in this country we do not have to trade everything that is haitian for something that is not ours. Think about it.

i admit that you have made a very good point; but my objection was contextual: ajane appeared to be antagonistic at the time, therefore i had taken his deliberate insistence on refering to the president as ti rene to be offensive. but your point is
