PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - Haitian lawmakers say they have rejected President Rene Preval's pick to fill the prime minister's office.

Parliament spokesmen say 51 legislators voted against international banker Ericq Pierre, while 35 voted for him. Nine did not vote during Monday's session.

Preval will have to nominate another candidate.

To take office, the candidate must be declared eligible and win a vote of confidence in separate sessions of the two houses of Parliament.

Preval nominated Pierre to the country's No. 2 post last month after the Senate fired Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis.

Alexis was dismissed amid criticism that he mismanaged the economy before violent protests that left seven people dead and destroyed hundreds of businesses.
