in 1970 8 friends form Texas, miost of them graduates of Baylor University, bought a 99 year lease on Tortuga.

It had 15,000 natives in grass huts with no running water or sewer system.

We were bringing in Shell Oil Company as an investor because it has the deepest seaport in the Carribbean, next to Guantanimo Bay. We were moving along to develop it into a major tourist attraction.

In 1972 my wife and I flew by our small private plane from Port Au Prince to Tortuga as part of our honeymoon in December.

We had a construciton superintendent living there in a mobile home. He was gone for the Christmas Hoolidays so we made love on the beautiful white beach in a small cove. Natives would bring us fresh food cooked daily.

When the oil embargo hit in 1973,Shell dropped out and our other financing dried up. Papa Doc had died so we handed Tortuga back to Baby Doc. I have an extensive collection of Haitian art which I dealy love, including a 3' tall bronze nude of my wife. I love the Haitian people.

We regularily brought clothing to the mission behind our house north of Port Au Prince.
