The Port-au-Prince public port (APN) is the most expensive port in the Western Hemisphere! This is completely normal considering that the APN port has a MONOPOLY on ALL the containers and general cargo that enter Haiti's capital.
Since April 2007, the National Port Authority has prevented all other private ports from receiving containers and general cargo at their facilities.
It is also true that this public port is under the control of a cartel of maritime agents that receive 100% of the containers and general goods.
These 9 agents are part of an association called Amarh; they are: Agemar (Mr. Edouard Baussan), Enmmarcolda (Mr. Wilhem Lemke Dadesky), RVAM (Mr. Reginald Villar), Thebaud Steamship (Mr. Patrick Thebaud), Madsen Agency (Mr. Eric Madsen), NADALSA (Mr. Jean Claude Nadal), Vital & Co. (Mr. Stephane Vital) and Hogarth Agency (Mr. Antoine Hogarth), Haiti Shipping (Mr. Harry Bretou).
In fact, this cartel has the MONOPOLY on containers in Haiti.
This is the reason why port taxes are so high and goods are so expensive in Haiti.
These agents are to blame for the high cost of transportation and maritime services that add to the price of food. As long as the government permits these maritime agents to have this MONOPOLY on the ports, Haiti's economy will remain in a choke hold.
All this information is true and can be verified at APN or the Finance Ministry.
