Hi Lindsey.

First of all, stay away from general google search for Haitian History.

I have been browsing the internet since 1993 and there lots of lies on Haitian History, lots of omissions, and straight up misinformation about Haitian History.

Most local libraries seem to have reliable sources on Haitian History.

I don't know about " Leader " but Haiti has had a number of presidents, heads of state, military junta, and military-civil junta, consultative governments, and so forth.

You did not say if you are in High School or starting college, however if you know little about Haiti to begin with, if you browse the internet you may not be able to distinguish between historical facts and fiction, between eyewitness accounts and speculative analysis.

Reference:
1. Lionel Paquin - Class and Color Politics has a list of presidents, heads of state although not truly complete but good enough for a simple two or three page essay in the back of the book.
2. Written in blood by Robert Heinl is a decent text on Haitian History in english.

Although a bit long, there is also a list of heads of state with a quick summary for each.
3. You can visit Bob Corbett's page, I find him to be truthful about Haiti.

The United States got involved in Haiti since the late 1790's and throughout the Presidency of Adams and Jefferson and so on.
There are several short materials from original sources (not specualtive travelogues) such US Marines archives.

A excellent reference is a text by Gordon Brown titled " The Toussaint's clause - The forefathers and the Haitian revolution ".

Also a fairly well known textbook is Brenda Plummer's Haiti and the world powers.

You can write me at yldep at aol.com and I will feed you some more references.

Good luck
