I find it embarrassing to witness how little it takes for Haitians to lose all sense of civility.
All of you involved in this Malebranche issue, including Malebranche herself, are perfect examples of why the country cannot work.
1. If when Malebranche wrote her post people who thought it was too long just left it alone she wouldn't have felt attacked and responded the way she did. I also thought her post was too long...I took one look at it and decided that I just did not have the time...maybe if she wrote a book, than I might read it [If I'm going to read all that, it had better be by the fire, with a glass of wine and soft music.] So, I moved on. I did not disturb her chosen activity by proclaiming that she should make her post shorter for my benefit.
Who was I to tell her how to write?
2. Malebranche's response was also inappropriate.
Her ego was hurt and her reaction was visceral.
She, as a professor, should have been able to remain calm and respond in a dignified manner to the complaint.
She speaks French well because she migrated to a French speaking country and got her degree there.
But her knowledge of French does not make her what Gramsci calls an organic intellectual...an intellectual who can connect to the people.
I suppose this just goes to prove that intellect is not the same as wisdom.
3. The horrible exchanges that followed (all in excellent French I might add) only displayed for the world how civilly savage even the best Haitians can be. All that French seems to be only a veneer for an ugly core.
We are truly a sad little people who deserve nothing more than what we have in Haiti today.
