Flo has a very good point here; the negative propaganda about Chavez comes from the American government's inability to control him. They will therefore do anything in their power to undermine all of his efforts, and they will provide support to anyone who is against him. This is how the US government traditionally operates in Latin American and Caribbean countries.
However, in this case the real problem with Chavez is that he might have meant to do good things for his country, but openly harassing the American government is never a smart political move, and by doing so he shot himself in the foot. We've all seen how long they can hold a grudge against people who openly defy them--see Cuba, Iraq, Libya, Iran, Grenada, Jamaica under Micheal Manly, etc. Being an intelligent leader, means that you have to know how to play the political thin line that will get you what your people need and at the same time keep the Americans out of your affairs.
Chavez played the tough man card instead of the intelligent card, and for that they will do anything ethical and unethical to get him ousted.
Furthermore, Chavez should not be compared to our current Haitian president because one of the reasons why Chavez is hated by the US is that most of his policies are aimed at helping the masses, and so tend to undercut the monopoly of the wealthy.
The changes that he was attempting to bring about were major.
What important changes that benefit our low income population can we associate with our current government?
