Having an army should not be the priority for Haiti at this moment. Our experience with our army in the past has been filled with negativities, and I personally think that this has been one of major factors contributing our current state of porverty and instability.
After years of struggle I feel that Haiti has a chance for a fresh start.
This is the time for the leaders in Haiti to build and reinforce the institutions that are going to contribute to our progress as nation.
The focus should not be on reinstating the army because we have no need for it. When it comes to Haiti being souvereigned, it seemes like we don't really understand the real issue.
Let's be pragmatic, our souvereignty does not really depend on reinstating the army. Only our ability to stand on our feet and develop our resources can guaranty that we remain a souvereigned state.
At this point, our succes as a nation depends on Haitian coming together and addressing the right issues, while maintaining our international relations on the basis of mutual respect.
It is a shame that today Haiti does not have a professional police able to provide security to Haitian citizens.
I feel like the leaders have not done enough to increase the number police officers and equip them. As far as security concerns, the focus should be on making the police force effective, and by doing that the leaders can set time table for the UN to gradually depletes their troups until Haiti can fully provide security for itself and maintain stability.
