Hi Brother L.K.,
I loved what you wrote.
I didn't agree with a few (very few) parts of it, but it was mostly accurate.
However, are you in Haiti now?
Or do you plan to go soon?
If you do, do a little investigative research with your lower middle class and peasant population.
You will (like I did) discover a sad NEW TRUTH about our population.
That cultural pride we use to have because we were the only black nation to have freed ourselves from colonialism (as opposed to given our freedom by the whites like all the other black Caribbean and African nations) is now almost completely eroded.
The missionaries have been really busy teaching those from that social group (85% of the population) that those ancestors that we think of as heroes were savage bastards, and that that's why Haiti is in the state that it is today.
That "self respect" that you mentioned which we kept--even wen we were mostly poor--is now practically gone, and no one's doing anything about it. That more than anything else that has happened to Haiti is what brakes my heart, because everything else can be rebuild, but cultural values and traditional beliefs once gone can rarely be retrieved.
