Ti Malice and the seed of division

It is amazing how I enjoy reading your thoughts.

And I must say that I agree with almost everything you said.

I agree that I should not generalize about the state of things when Duvalier pere was in power.

Although I did not grow-up in Haiti during that era, I returned to Haiti immediately following that time and lived there for four (4) years.

And unlike most Haitians who either left the country temporarily or did not go back during the Aristide period (and the period before that), I went back several times over and over again.

I went back when they were burning people and flights to Haiti were mostly grounded.

I went back at times when my family and friends insisted that I don't because of the danger.

I have consistently known the pulse of the Haitian people.

The difference between many others and me is that because I deliberately stay away from the Haitian community when I am not in Haiti, I am not swayed by the constant opinion of Haitian partisanship.

What I registered from my four (4) year stay in Haiti after the D. p period never left me. Even though the man was dead, people still did not dare criticize anything or anyone in his government for fear of reprisals.

Everyone whom I came in contact with at various social levels knew someone who had been severely negatively affected by that government; a government that if you were not on its cheering party you were as good as dead. That is not a government that should be cheered today.

There is one group of people who were less impacted and were relatively left alone.

That was the peasant class group, and we all know that, at the time, they were not politically active.

Was Duvalier's time better than the time since he's been gone?

In my opinion yes...

During his time at least the Haitian economy was steady--the people ate.
The country had a solid and respectable infrastructure and structure.

My favorite...the way he handled and played foreign governments is today an example of brilliant leadership.

Was he better than Aristide?

No one has done as much damage to the country as Aristide.

(I assume now I will have all the Aristide fans posting several nasty things to me).

Should people wish for the D. p. time back because of the positive things I just mentioned.

I suppose everyone has the right to wish for what they want. But let's not forget that we Haitians tend to "couri pou rivie pou nou tombwe lan lame."

Knowing the things that were good about D.p does not mean that we have to suddenly ignore the horrible realities of his rule. Yes Haiti needs a strong government, but that does not mean that we need a tyrant.

We DESERVE a government that, like you said, will bring the people together, and will have the interest of ALL the people in mind. Right now, the poor are starving; the lower middle class is always on the verge of exodus; the upper classes lives in fear and invests very little in the country--just in case they need to get out.
Another dictatorship won't fix that. What we need is intelligent, creative leadership.
