Jynee, I agree with the basic thrust of your message, with one exception: The reason france sold the Louisiana Territory was because she was embroiled in a costly war with other European powers, and was engaged in a dispute with Spain over the land anyway.

she needed the money desperately, and moreover, had NO way to protect it or administer it. Had she not sold it, America would have simply taken it, like She took nearly half of Mexico from the Mexicans and essentially twisted Spain's arm into ceding Florida.

Don't forget that many say, "America was born, and has thrived, of the Sword, and of the Sword, She shall perish." I don't necessarily agree with such a simplistic evaluation, but I must recognize that it wasn't coined for no reason...
