A magnitude-5.0 earthquake that originated in Canada sent tremors into New York Wednesday afternoon.

The tremors lasted for about 30 seconds, starting at 1:41 p.m. in the Ontario-Quebec border region, shaking homes and businesses from Toronto to New York, New Jersey and states stretching through Wisconsin, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS said the quake's epicenter was in an uninhabited area about 30 miles northeast of Ottawa at a depth of about 12 miles.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Nervous workers fled office buildings in Toronto and the Ottawa region as the quake hit. Chris Cornell, 46, who works in downtown Toronto, said desks and furniture shook as he sat at his desk in a finance office.

In New York, people reported feeling tremors throughout the state.

David French, 53-year-old state worker from Cicero, N.Y., said he was at his computer inside his home near Syracuse when he felt his chair shake.

"I thought the chair was breaking or something," he said. "I looked over, and my filing cabinet was moving."

The last big earthquake to hit the Ontario-Quebec border region was an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale that hit in October 1998, according to the the Toronto Star.
