Strong 6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Northern Chile

A strong earthquake has shaken northern Chile, though there were no immediate reports of victims or damage from the 6.2-magnitude quake.

SANTIAGO, Chile -- A strong earthquake has shaken northern Chile.

There are no immediate reports of victims or damage from the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey gave a preliminary magnitude of 6.2.

Friday morning's temblor hit at 11:52 a.m. local time (10:52 a.m. ET).

Its epicenter was near Copiapo, 380 miles north of the capital of Santiago.
