Nadege, you lack facts in your statement that Aristide moved the people forward.
Under Aristide the price of food doubled.
The unemployment rate quadrupled.
The peasant left their land and flooded the capital, because they had no help with agricultural development, and policies forced on them by the IMF through Aristide resulted in the greatest agricultural lost in Haitian history.
Aristide turned the population into a killing machine which resulted in the massacre of several thousand Haitian citizens.
And I could go on. Hence, your argument that Aristide was not as damaging as Duvalier lacks some basic facts.
I am not a Duvalierist, far from it. Duvalier killed and imprisoned several members of my family.
However, "rayi chin di den'l blan." During the Duvalier era, Haiti was never known as "the poorest nation." We were not the beggar nation that we became under Aristide and Preval.
The poor were not so poor. No Haitians were eating mud cakes.
The agricultural development was stagnant but not completely destroyed as it became under Aristide.
We had hospitals--good ones too. We had more movie theaters than most other countries in the Caribbean.
The years after Aristide and before the earthquake Haiti did not have one--not one--movie theater.
Under the Duvaliers, Haiti was always clean and its population understood the concept of hygiene.
Under Duvalier, Haitian children learn of Haitian history by books written by Haitians.
Under Aristide, Haitians now learn their history from books written by the French, who tell our history their way (just imagine how twisted that is).
Learning history is learning pride, so Haitians who grew up under under Aristide and Preval were thought to have no pride, no self-esteem, no dignity.
Under Aristide and Preval, the country was flooded by low-life missionaries who also deliberately thought our people self-hatred.
Under Duvalier, those people weren't even allowed in the country, and so they could not teach their fake poison to our population.
So, basically, under Aristide and Preval, in every aspect the country did not grow but regressed by nearly 100 years.
The fact is that we do not need a murderous dictator like Duvalier in Haiti, but we also do not need incompetent, ignorant, fools like Aristide or Preval.
Wanting any of these people back shows a lack of vision as to what is really good for Haiti.
We deserve better than the all around unqualified leaders we had in the past. Duvalier was incompetent because he could not rule without violence, and Aristide and Preval were simply overall incompetent.
