PHILADELPHIA - Fox 29 News has learned that Philadelphia police are investigating after an officer attempted to run a background check on President Barack Obama from a department patrol unit.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, one day after the president's birthday, Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser reported.

Sgt. Ray Evers from the police department's Public Affairs Unit confirmed that an investigation is under way involving an 18th District police officer who is a five-year force veteran.

Police are not identifying the officer at this time.

"This is beyond dumb. This is really, really dumb," says Sgt. Evers.

"The officer on the street is gonna run tags. If the persons wanted, could run guns, things of that nature.

Things the officer's gonna need on the street to run an investigation on the street."

According to Evers, the attempt to call up a background check set off some kind of early warning system they have in police dispatch, which notified the officer's captain in the 18th District.

"He was very, very stupid.

This was a stupid act. It's unprofessional and it will be dealt with," says Sgt. Evers.

That captain and the department's Internal Affairs Bureau are conducting an investigation, and it appears federal authorities may be looking into the incident, Schratwieser reported.

The officer is still on the street pending the outcome of the investigation, but Evers said the commissioner's office has made it clear that some action will be taken in the matter.

It's not clear what information might have been sought during the attempted record check.

Police are going through the rest of the officer's computer transmissions.

He remains on the street pending the outcome of this investigation.

A high-ranking Fraternal Order of Police official tells Fox 29, "This is a classic case of stupidity."

But during the campaign and since his presidency began, some have questioned or legally challenged Obama's citizenship.

Hawaii officials stated in October and reaffirmed last month that Obama was born in the Aloha State, citing birth records, but state law restricts the release of such documents to the public.

Two DeKalb County, Ga., police officers were accused of running a criminal background check on the president last month.

Officials said both officers were put on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
