Linda thank you. Your response was brilliant.
I was reading it and I had chills going up my spine (no joke); it all makes perfect sense.
Thank you again for taking the time to re-post on the same subject I apologize for any inconvenience.
I'm still a newbie (smile).
I probably shouldn't write this but I am so ecstatic by your answer, and it is similar to what my views are concerning a true aristocracy in any society.
Linda i'm not one to pretend, my life in Haiti was simple, i never lived in Port-au-Prince.
First time i went to Port-au-Prince was to get my passport done I was either 8 or 9 years old. Later before I left Haiti I spent about 3 months there but I never went out during that period so I don't know a thing about Port-au-Prince.
I say this because people often say Port-au-Prince is where the true Haitian Aristocracy lives.
I thought maybe that's why I don't know about the true Haitian aristocracy; i had not met them yet. and I've always wondered if they exist why are they not doing anything to preserve the Haitian culture.
I'm an extremely curious person and I love to learn.
I've been trying to learn about Haitian culture.
A while back my uncle introduced me to one of his friends who had just moved to the US from Haiti and this friend started telling me about the sort of lifestyle he lived back in Port-au-Prince and the type of people he interacted with. The who's who of Haitian society, politicians, diplomats, business leaders, etc...
I know for sure he was not making it up; he does know all the people that he says he knows.
The only thing i found hard to swallow was when he says he knows all the mulattoes in Haiti.
I said to myself how can one person know every single member of a race of people in a country.
I think he stretched that one.
The reason i'm saying this is because he tried to convinced me that yes there was such a thing as a Haitian Aristocracy living in Haiti but when he told me about the way this supposed Aristocracy conducted itself I told them that this was not the way a true Aristocracy should behave but I don't think he ever understood what I was trying to say.
Because like you, I think a true Aristocrat should care about his country.
They may not want to mingle with people like me, but they should nonetheless want to preserve their culture.
And you know the other thing I realized is that most of the people that this friend classifies as bourgeois, I would compare them to a working class American family.
