Hey Zac, you cannot see that movie and think of Desmoulins--he does not fit into any of the characters because they are all heroes in their own way, whereas Desmoulins is just a religious puppet.
I not only have that movie, I have a copy of it at home. Did you ever see the movie Les Sept Mercenaires when you were a kid (I never met you, but from our posts I figure you're probably too young to have seen it).
Anyway, this is an earlier Japanese version of it. The American directors stole the plot (as they often do) and made their own version by using cowboy heroes instead of Japanese ones. It is the story of several Samurai warriors (and one wanna be) who go into a little town in a rural area in Japan, where the people are being terrorized by the local warlord.
To make a long story short, they give their lives to help the people free themselves from their oppressive situation.
It's a great film, but has nothing to do with Desmoulins.
Each of the characters in his own way is an independent thinking individual.
Desmoulins is just a religious fanatic being promoted by the religious right.
A hero he is not.
