No Result - Non profit Org. and La Douane in Haiti

< Previous | Home | Next >

Good evening President Preval,

I am a Haitian native living in the USA for the past few years.

Due to the deplorable situation in Haiti I decided to see what I could do to help the few people I knew while I lived in Haiti and a few others in the community.

With the help of a few friends we collected at least 1000 pounds of food, along with toiletries, school supplies and some lightly used clothing and shoes and sent them to Haiti in twelve (12) barrels from California.

Although it was a challenge to get everything organized, we were happy to do it and thought that it was worth the money spent.

We also thought that our poor friends and the needy people in Haiti will receive them without any problem.

The barrels arrived in Haiti the last week of August.

The Pastor who was to receive them was contacted but denied permission to see them.

At least one month later, the pastor was given permission to inspect the barrels.

He found out that at least nine of the barrels were broken into.

When comparing the list we sent him and all the items in each barrel, there were many items such as rice, beans, toiletries etc. that were removed without our permission.

It is now about two months--mid October-- since the barrels have been in Haiti Customs' office.

The pastor have been told after many inquiries that he will be taxed and still hasn't been given permission to pick-up the barrels.

The items in the barrels were sent under the cover of a non-profit organization, The Healing Shepherd Corporation, located in California.

Are churches and non-profit schools receiving benevolent products in Haiti for the poor taxed by the government

Nothing should have been removed from the barrels because they were under the care of the officials at Customs in Haiti.

We are appalled at the bureaucratic mindsets and lack of honesty of the people involved in this situation.

These items were donated by hard-working people in the USA who wanted to help the Worldwide Church of God people and some of the poor in the community where the church resides at #23 La Fleur Duchene in Haiti.

This church has also a school in construction to facilitate a Christian education to children in Haiti.

The people who donated those items wanted them to go for the cause they were sent to and not to the government personnel or others who have access to them at the Customs office who are salaried employees.

I am posting this message to get any feedback from President Preval and anyone who can help our situation.

This is really a depressing situation.

We are praying for God's intervention in this difficult situation and we know that God will open all doors and allow the people who really need the remaining stuff to get them.

I can be reached at mariemonaus at healingshepherdonline.org

I apologize for speaking my mind, but frankly I am quite upset and hurt by this whole situation.

We are waiting to hear from someone and thank you for all your help.
