This is pretty basic political strategy.

Politics 101. The ban would be on imports not exports.

The strategy would allow local Haitian farmers to grow whatever Haiti can grow (e.g., rice, coffee, sugar, etc...).

What is been happening is that trade policy lowered tariffs on imports and put the local Haitian farmers out of business.

The price of the products were so low that Haitian farmers could not compete.

You understand.

Hence, what needs to be done is allow Haitian farmers to feed Haiti and also allow them to export.

After a period of time the ban could be lifted on the imported goods produced by Haiti but higher tariffs should be imposed.

Therefore, if rich people in Haiti can afford for example "Goya", they would have to pay more for it. But you know for sure the poorer people would be buying Haitian because it is cheaper.

What we are talking about is so basic that even a grade school child can understand.

If the Preval administration does understand these basic principles of politics and macro/micro economy, either they are grossly incompetent or someone is paying them money under the table to allow the situation to persist.

If they love the country instead of looking out for themselves, Haiti should be ahead of the Dominican Republic.
