Desmoulins,
Haiti was colonized by the French from about 1664-1804.
I'm sure you know this but, originally, it was the Taíno-Arawak people, then Christopher Columbus claimed it for Spain in 1492, after the Spaniards killed (by disease, malnutrition, sword and hard work) most of the natives, others escaped to other island/countries, and few stayed, hid and migled with the African slaves that the Spainards began importing for labor around 1517.
Then About 1630, some Frenchmen who were driven away from the island of Hispaniola fled to nearby Tortuga (Haiti).
The Spaniards tried to drive them out of Tortuga, but the buccaneers were joined by many other French, Dutch and English and turned to piracy against Spanish shipping.
France and Spain settled hostilities on the island around 1697 which divided Hispaniola between them. France received the western third and named it Saint-Domingue (modern day Haiti).
Many French colonists came and built up plantations.
By 1790, Saint-Domingue had greatly overshadowed its eastern counterpart in terms of wealth and population.
It quickly became the richest French colony in the New World (through slave work of course
Isn't funny how hard we worked for them but we can't do the same for ourselves/each other?
(just thinking out loud)
Anyhow, in 1791 the revolt of the slaves began, and the rest is history.
