The name Caribbean was given because the Caribs were a known tribe there along with Tainos and Arawakies and West Indies which as understandably Christopher Columbus thought he was heading toward India and got the Caribbean and saw a striking resemblance in lifestyle and characteristic of the people there and he called them the Indians Of The West.

Latin-America is comprised of those Countries which starts with the big Antilles.
Cuba, Haiti (which today both Haitian and Dominican Republic) also known as Hispaniola, Jamaica and Puerto Rico, then the little Antilles St Thomas, Guadeloupe, Martinique and such then you have the all the Southern American Latin Countries such as Mexico, Panama, Columbia and so on. Which states that those countries and their languages derived from Roman Latin and those languages are considered and called the Languages of Romance, not as in Romantic you "Cretin" but as in ROME- ROMANS.
Haitians are not trying to be Latinos so that they can flatter those other Spanish speaking Countries, but rather because it is a simple fact period.

Hispanic now indeed gives it a more predominance in terms of relation to the Language, however not every hispanics speak English and America and not everybody from the Caribbean thus partial Latin-America speak spanish thus they come up with the word LATINO instead so that it does not categorically conform to one specific group.
