I totally agree that our kids need to know the country that their parents came from but Haiti’s condition does not permit this to happen NOW. Let me just say, without going into details, that until recently when a close relative of mines fell victim to the kidnapping phenomenon there, I had no problem visiting Haiti.

I know Haiti in not the only country in this situation and that if I love my country I cannot turn my back on it completely but for the same reason we work hard here to provide for our family, we can’t afford want to place them in harms way—literally.

This argument is not just for our children but people like us, U.S. citizens, Canadians, and the illegal immigrants living here and beyond who can’t live in peace where they are but can’t survive in Haiti.

It’s apparent that whatever the solution is, it's not easy, and while I agree with you that each individual should evaluate the situation and decide how they can help, I’ve often thought that if we as a people can figure out what is it that we(Haitian people) do best, invest in that, market it within our communities(here, in Haiti, and beyond), then we would have taken a step closer to unity and financial stability.

But then again sometimes I can be a bona fide idealist.
