The insecurity problem Haiti is a direct result of the lack of employment, education, the high cost of living, criminals from the US being tossed back to Haiti and drug addiction.
The US would only be interested in Haiti if it had something to offer them, such as petroleum, or other raw materials that they need.
They get plenty of petroleum from Latin America and other Caribbean nations such as Trinidad,and St.Croix for example.
The US was not interested in acquiring the Dominican Republic although they wanted to become another Puerto Rico due to their large African descendants population in the early 1900's. So I disagree with GrosGreen, the US is not interested in Haiti.
The UN is there to prevent all the boat people from migrating to US shores.
Right now Haiti has nothing to offer the entire world but its misery.
However Preval should have had a Haitian security force trained already to replace the UN. I am not aware if such action has been implemented.
It has been two years since Preval is in power, one would wonder if he plans to rule strictly under the UN protection or does he have a choice in the matter.
